Welcome to the 35th edition of the Univision Song Contest! 10 years ago in May 2013 while on a road trip between Thunder Bay and Duluth, MN, I wondered how we could take something like the Eurovision Song Contest and bring some version of it to a much younger USF.
10 years is an unreal amount of time isn't it? Just thinking about how much the community and we've all changed. I was still in high school, remember being terrified for my future. My passions in life could be described as two things: Blacraft and EU3. Crazy how much we've all grown and changed, the stumbles, failures, and successes. At the same time, we all have so much future left ahead of us (approximately 8 years if you believe shimao) and so much more change coming. It's been a pleasure going through my coming of age along with all of you.
After some brainstorming on how the proposed contest would work we (I believe atomic helped, if so thank you, if not I take that back) came upon a confusing mess of rules. Many mistakes were made, some controversies, and lots of experimenting until we eventually settled on...pretty much the same rule set as the contests over at escforum.net that I discovered later.
After lots of eager discussion, June 13th, 2013 the first Univision Song Contest was posted on USF. I'd say it beat my low expectations in terms of participation and interest, and was below my probably too high expectations for song quality. Never the less, the contest sailed on. I will need a sleuth to go through IRC logs to see if the proposed synchtube talked about in that thread happened or not, or if the synchtube tradition started an edition or two later. Crisis almost struck the first edition of Univision, where the entrant of the song that came second (swonx) did not vote. At the time, there were no penalties for not voting so I am very thankful that a full on controversy did not happen if I had to disqualify the winner or let swonx win despite not voting...
Since then, interest in Univision has come and gone. From the lows of the mid to late 2010s, to the pandemic revival, to another recent bit of lull in forum contests, Univision has soldiered on. Very glad that we have returned here in Aahrus to celebrate 10 years of what has ended up being such a staple of our community. Here's to another 10 years!
